Der Begriff freie Lizenz bezeichnet im weitesten Sinne eine Lizenz, die dem Nutzer gewisse Freiheiten zusichert. Ursprünglich gab es insbesondere freie Softwarelizenzen, inzwischen gibt es Lizenzen, die für beliebige Werke (beispielsweise Texte, Audio, Video) gelten können.

Zu den ersten Freien Lizenzen gehört die Originalversion der BSD-Lizenz und die GNU General Public License (GPL). Beide gewähren die vier Grundfreiheiten von Freier Software. Die GPL fordert im Gegensatz zur BSD-Lizenz, dass alle Änderungen an der Software ebenfalls unter der GPL stehen müssen (Copyleft).

Im Bereich von Freien Lizenzen, die nicht nur für Software gelten, sind neben der GNU Free Documentation License insbesondere Creative-Commons-Lizenzen verbreitet.

Die Free Software Foundation und die Open Source Initiative geben Listen von Freien, bzw. Open-Source-Lizenzen aus, die zu großen Teilen deckungsgleich sind.
